I am not sure how many people have moved past ink and general cartilage penetration, but I am quite interested in the phenomenon.
I am wondering people's opinions of extreme body mod... amputation, nullification, strip skin art. There is a lot of debate over where to draw the line for the definition of body art, and what it means. Namely that it is (especially in the situations of amputation, castration, etc) obscuring the lines between art and mental illness, and it is suggested that calling it "body mod" pejoratives the serious condition that it is.
SO... I have read a lot about this stuff, and I am flippin lost.
So community can answer this stuff.....
What do you feel about the BME community? Is there anyone here that has done anything more extreme than standard fare stuff?
relatively graphic links: (sorta.. depends on who you are)

Also... does anyone identify as BIID?

Re: nullo's, BME, scar art ... and body art
Tue, December 4, 2007 - 12:02 PMTechnically, I do identify with BIID. I am an amputee wannabe so there is an image problem that I deal with regularly. As for whether it can be called body art is up in the air, certainly it is a mental dysfunction. I do consider it a form of body modification, but that remains as a personal point and I don't make that decision for others. -

Re: nullo's, BME, scar art ... and body art
Tue, December 4, 2007 - 4:49 PMYou are really self aware. Are you cozy talking about it? None of my business, but incredibly interesting. Do you feel you will move past wannabe? I know the safety issues with the self mods are incredibly complex.... tendons snapping back and what not. What part are you considering, or is it that you are aware of it being a mental issue, and do not plan to go forward past wannabe.
And do you use the term wannabe pejoratively, or technically. Inside BIID, wannabes are a majour aspect of the world. So are pretenders. But I assume you are the former.
Sorry to pry, thanks for the thoughtful response, and cheers.

Re: nullo's, BME, scar art ... and body art
Tue, December 25, 2007 - 11:28 PMwell I have a forked tongue, about 6 hours worth of scarification/skin removal, if it counts i've done 4 suspensions, and I believe i took two of the photos on that "strip skin" link you gave us. I may just have gone past the cusp of body art limits... Although so far I have decided to remove anything that can't grow back. I don't have BIID, and i have no ill will towards my skin. In fact I've kept some of it... it's gone quite hard now though in it's little plastic baggie. -

Re: nullo's, BME, scar art ... and body art
Tue, December 25, 2007 - 11:44 PMoh and i do consider amputation to be body modification, and as long as the risks are accessed and the final outcome is weighed properly I have no issues with people who want to slice and dice. As for body art... I dunno, I look at body art as something that enhances, but really maybe this is enhancement...
On top of that people getting tummy tucks, cutting off huge chunks of perfectly good flesh... or people getting breast implants or cartilage removed or placed in their nose... do they not have some sort of biid? an extreme desire for their body to look different from what it is by surgically altering the offending part... -

Re: nullo's, BME, scar art ... and body art
Sat, December 29, 2007 - 3:58 PM*they* definitely have BIID. The worst kind. They think they aren't worthwhile or valued the way they are... and desperately seek and lash out to alter that any way they can. Eeek. Cut off my pinky any day. ;^)
